Mount Meru Hike
Overview
Mount Meru, in Arusha, Tanzania's second-highest peak, is a challenging but rewarding climb. The standard route, the Momella Route, typically takes 4 days and 3 nights, though a 3-day option exists.
The trek starts at Momella Gate, within Arusha National Park, and ascends through diverse ecosystems to reach the summit, Socialist Peak, at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet).
Key Aspects of a Mount Meru Hike:
Momella Route:
This is the only official route to the summit and offers both a shorter, steeper (Northern) and longer, more scenic (Southern) option.
Duration:
The standard 4-day itinerary allows for better acclimatization and a more enjoyable pace, while the 3-day option is more strenuous.
Wildlife:
The lower slopes of Mount Meru are part of Arusha National Park, so expect to see wildlife like giraffes, buffalo, and various bird species during the initial part of the trek.
Scenery:
The hike progresses through lush rainforest, heather and moorland, and finally alpine desert as you ascend.
Huts:
There are two mountain huts on the route, Miriakamba Hut and Saddle Hut, which provide basic but essential accommodation.
Summit Day:
The final ascent to Socialist Peak is typically done in the early hours of the morning to catch the sunrise.
Guides and Rangers:
A guide is mandatory due to the presence of wildlife and the lack of trail markings. An armed ranger is also required for safety.
